Summary:	The scientific biological and geological program will be started at the new established Czech station at the James Ross Island in Weddel Sea, Antarctica, in the season 2004/2005. The biological diversity of this region is very little known, and especially cyanobacteria, which represent substantial part of biocenoses of phototrophic microorganisms in deglaciated areas, are almost unknown from this region. James Ross Island is situated in the marginal parts of maritime Antarctica with extensive deglaciated areas from recent periods. The knowledge of cyanobacterial genetic and ecological diversity is one of the essential preconditions to the study of primary succession in all terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems.
