Summary: |
The Pinus mugo complex is an important group of pines native in Central Europe and adjacent regions. In spite of this fact, the group is extremely heterogenously classified, with an intricate variability and unclear phylogeography. The objective of this project is to explore genetic structure and phylogeographic relations of the pine complex using classical methods of comparative morphology and molecular methods. Contribution of hybridization to structure of important populations and relevant taxa of the complex, inclusive of certain hybrid influence of Pinus sylvestris species, will be determined. Samples from at least 20 to 25 representative populations of the Pinus mugo complex within the whole geographic range and at least five European populations of Pinus sylvestris will be taken for nuclear DNA and organellar DNA (cpDNA and mtDNA) analyses. |
