Summary: | Stability of Norway spruce mountain forests is significantly influenced by nutrient turnover and needle litter decomposition. Fallen needles form the major part of organic matter entering the process of decomposition. Humic acids (HAs) produced during the process of decomposition bind phosphorus (P) in a variety of forms. The project proposed will deal with both P inputs (from Ol and Of needles entering the process of decomposition) and P outputs (forms of P bound in HAs). Role of saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal fungi (in both in vitro and in vivo conditions with host plant) involved in decomposition processes will be studied using a series of experiments in microcosms systems. Effect of individual fungi and their interactions on processes concerning formation of HAs and transport and transformation of P forms in needle litter will be studied using systems with sterile Ol and Of needles inoculated with model fungal species. |
