Summary: |
The scientific exploration of the European flora was initially based on, and nowadays is documented in a number of herbarium collections. The type specimens and other authentic material in the collections have become an important element of the nomenclatural stability and continuity of taxonomic work. Among very valuable older collections preserved in Czech and Moravian institutions (herbarium acronyms BRNM, PR, PRC) there are several ones particularly rich in type specimens, or of cultural andhistorical value. They are collections of F. A. Waldstein, F. W. Schmidt, I. F. Tausch, K K Münch-Bellinghausen, K B. Presl, C. F. W. Wallroth and J. G. Ch. Lehmann. There are many names currently or potentially in common use that are or may be typified by specimens of these herbaria; the authentic specimens are frequently studied or asked for by experts in numerous genera of the European flora. |
