Summary: |
Snow algae are adapted to an especially harsh habitat characterised by low temperatures, high levels of visible and UV radiations and instability. In spite of representing an excellent model for investigation of life in extreme environment, their ecophysiology is still poorly understood. The combined effect of low temperature, visible and UV radiations on growth physilogy, and cell morphology of selected strains will be evaluated in a modified unit for crossed gradients of temperature and light. The physiological status of the cultures will be evaluated by photosynthesis measurement and composition and secondary metabolite contents will be analyzed. The morphological changes will be observed by light and electron microscope. The field experiments will be performed in Krkonoše Mountains and in High TatrasMountains and will be focused on locality characterization, population observations and in situ primary productivity measurement. |
