Summary: The aim of the project is to quantify the contribution of healthcare facilities to the total micropollutant load of end-of-pipe wastewater treatment plants through a large-scale wastewater monitoring campaign. The monitoring will cover part of the health facilities responsible for at least 60% of the bed stock and at least 60% of the hospital admissions in the two model cities (regional and district city). Other objectives of the project are the creation of a dedicated database of drugs found in sewage systems and wastewater treatment plants, an overview of their metabolites, specificity of use in health care facilities, toxic properties for the environment and a critical search of possible technologies suitable for decentralised reduction of these substances at the source of introduction into the sewer system.
