Summary: | TAČR, SS – Programme of applied research, experimental development and innovation in the field of environment - Environment for Life The aim of this project is to assess the value of Czech old forests (age >130 years) outside strictly protected areas (national parks, reserves) for biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration (priority goal 1.15). We will measure real tree ages, forest structure, lichen, beetle, fungi, plant, and bird biodiversity, and tree volume and growth. It will provide missing information about Czech old forests. We will test if increase of forest age beyond 130 years still affects biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and forest structure. Using additional available data, we aim at generalizing our findings to the whole population of old forests. The results together with management recommendations will be used for preparation of strategic documents of Ministry of Environment. |
