Summary: The project aims to comprehensively assess the benefits of pea root symbioses to the agroecosystem by comparing two genotypes with different symbiotic capacity, i.e. ability to support the development of root symbionts and benefit from them. The project combines basic research on the variability of symbiotic capacity among pea genotypes under model conditions involving transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses with a comparison of two contrasting genotypes under field conditions. This will allow to describe the contributions of root symbionts to provisioning, regulating and supporting ecosystem services in the context of other plant functional traits. The results of the project will thus contribute to the understanding of the physiological principles of symbiotic capacity and to the assessment of the importance of root symbionts for agroecosystems.
