Summary: Holocene climate changes are among the most important drivers of modern ecosystems. Data on ecosystem responses to climate change provide important information for modelling their future responses and optimising conservation strategies. This project will develop some new and validate the conventional calibration and indicator systems for climate reconstruction based on various biotic and abiotic proxies. The methods used include (i) transfer functions of modern calibration datasets applied to the species composition of fossil samples, (ii) stable isotope analyses from different fossil materials, and (iii) global circulation model simulations with decadal temporal resolution (CCSM3 model). They will be applied and tested on selected precise fossil records in the Western Carpathians. The main objectives of the project are both the reconstruction of Holocene climate parameters and the comparison of reconstruction consistency between individual methods and proxies. By validating their applicability and limitations, we will make recommendations of general value.
