Summary: Arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) importantly contributes to plant nutrient uptake, and its functioning depends on P and N availability in soil. Both nutrients are taken up from soil either directly by plant roots or via the extraradical hyphae of AM, mediated by specialized plant transporters. The project focuses the synchronization of both uptake ways at different availabilities of soil N and P. A greenhouse experiment with Sorghum will be conducted to quantify fungal uptake of N and the expression of N and P transporters in roots and fungal structures alongside with plant growth and fungal development. The project joints the complementary know-how of both institutions and is part of their common research focus on possible utilization of AM symbiosis in agricultural production systems.
