Summary: |
Green algae with cyanobacteria are pioneers of life in new or extreme areas and these oxyphototrophic microorganisms from marginal habitats have a great hidden potential for basic research - how the life under extreme conditions functions, as well as for practical applications.
As the main producers of organic matter play an important role in terrestrial polar ecosystems. They are widespread there and frequently produce visible biomass. Algal communities are essential in the process of initial primary succession following landscape deglaciation in Arctic and Antarctica, mainly nowadays in the time of global warming of the planet and their parallel types from temperate habitats are suitable as reference model. Polyphasic approach by using combination of traditional phenotypic and genotypic criteria provided by present molecular biology is the main method for knowledge of diversity, speciation, variability and taxonomic classification of polar cyanobacteria and algae.
