Summary: |
The aim of the project is to specify the effect of different conditions of habitats on growth, biomass and nutrient allocation in the fern Athyrium distentifolium and, to determine ecological factors responsible for its proliferic vegetative spreading on clear-cut sites. The obtained data answer how does the fern respond to high amount of nitrogen in acid soils and how efficiently is it able to immobilize excess of nitrogen in decaying plant parts and soil organic matter. The aim of the project is also to find out in what way growth activity and decomposing litter of A. distentifolium influence the soil system and, consequently, the losses of organic matter and nutrients on deforested sites. The results of the proposed project will specify the role of fern stands in the turnover of organic matter and nutrients on deforested sites. The studies will thus contribute to the solution of problems in disturbed landscape and/or restoration ecology programs. |
