Summary: | Plants at high altitudes have to cope with severe environmental conditions. There are several observations that plants from the highest elevations can have unusually high concentrations of nutrients, (N up to 5%) and nonstructural carbohydrates. Except for extreme situations, the concentration of nutrients is not directly related to supply in soil, but largely depends on the way in which the plants use them. The contents of essential nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus or compounds like nonstructural carbohydrates are important plant traits, closely linked to plant physiology and whole-season economy. Their in-depth studies carried out at uppermost limits of plant occurrence can provide a novel insight into processes of adaptation and the functioning under extreme life conditions |
