Summary: |
The present proposal aims to study the Campanula patula L. polyploid
complex using a variety of approaches. By employing flow cytometry,
AFLP fingerprinting, sequencing of variable chloroplast regions as
well as hybridization experiments, the question whether evolution
repeats itself in polyploid complexes is to be addressed.
Campanula patula provides a suitable model system for studying recurrent
formation of polyploids and for estimating the role of polytopic
polyploidy in plant evolution.
This project should open new possibilities for studying
C. patula from the perspectives of population biology and ecological
genetics with the knowledge of genetic and morphological
differentiation and partially also reproductive isolation among
populations. At the same time, novel information will be gathered
that will significantly contribute to the biosystematic treatment of
the group throughout its distribution range. |
