New opportunities for grassland species in warming temperate winters
Scientists at the Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences have described how perennial meadow plants in Central Europe have been taking advantage of the warm winters of recent years. They found that more grassland plant species remain green and photosynthetically active during winter. Their winter leaves, however, have different characteristics from summer leaves and are therefore sufficiently resistant to frosts that can occur suddenly in warmer winters.
