Production of dormant stages and stress resistance of polar cyanobacteria and algae

(2007 – 2011)

Photosynthetic prokaryotic cyanobacteria and eukaryotic microalgae are the main producers of organic matter and are widely spread in all polar aquatic and terrestrial habitats. These microorganisms are well adapted to stressful conditions common to the polar regions, such as alternating freeze-thawing cycles, long-term action of low temperatures, desiccation, low availability of mineral nutrients, changes in illumination, etc. To cope with a variety of stress factors, microorganisms have adopted different strategies, one of which is entering the dormant (resting) and stress-resistant state. Oscillatorian cyanobacteria Phormidium and filamentous algae Zygnema are studied. In Třeboň algae culture collection there are kept several strains of these cyanobacteria and algae. The study is focussed on physico-chemical parameters (irradiance, temperature, over supply, lack of mineral nutrients, etc.) which influence development of resting stages. Simultaneously, we are describing morphological and ultrastructural cell changes which occur during these changes.
